About cotton

Cotton is the most popular fibre worldwide – covering approximately 2.5% of cultivated land globally.

Top countries producing cotton includes China, India, United States, and Pakistan.

During 2016-2017 season, annual global production reached 3.2 million metric tonnes and as a global average, to produce 1kg of cotton requires about 20,000 litres.

In conventional cotton farming, 10-16% of world’s pesticides are used – more than any other single major crop.

As a consequence, chemicals used in the process pollute the air and surfaces of water, also affecting ecosystems from the use of pesticides.

You may have heard people talking about organic cotton.

But what exactly makes it ‘organic’?

Organic cottons are grown using methods and resources with lower impact to the environment.

There are different levels of certification, let’s take GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard as an example.

Under GOTS, organic production is based on a farming system that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the use of toxic, persistent pesticides and fertiliser, and excludes genetic modification.

The standard covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibres.

Cotton is one of the biggest crop farmed world wide, it has become critical to minimise environmental impacts as much as possible.
